The Blues, Auckland’s Super Rugby Team finished off their pre-season fitness training for 2012 with a killer session at Bethells Beach starting with a hike across the beach, then a hill walk and finally climbing the sand dunes. I was there all the way to capture their efforts. Whilst I had a relatively easy 3-hour walk around the training course, the squad had to carry either stretchers with team-mates or large car tyres, plus undertake various exercises throughout the journey which culminated with a sprint up the sand dunes 15 times. I managed the dunes once! Once done and cleaned up the squad were entertained to a BBQ by the local surf lifeguards complete with a visit by Santa.
After much publicity and anticipation, the stage musical version of Mary Poppins finally opened at Auckland’s Civic Theatre on 18 October to a star-studded premiere, with the red carpet nearly worn out. I was there on behalf of The Edge to capture the magic and excitement of the evening.
A full house, were treated the a magnificent show, with many surprises throughout the two hours and forty-five minute performance. My photographs from the evening are now on the Facebook page of The Edge, so if you were there you may find yourself among the pix. I was also able to get the eight children who play Michael and Jane Banks to pose with Mary Poppins and Bert for a photo.
New Zealand appears to have gone Hobbit mad with the world premiere of Sir Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit-An Unexpected Journey, the first of three films from the book. Not to miss out, I had several projects photographing aspects of the Hobbits mania. First was Air New Zealand’s effort by covering one of their Boring 777-300ER aircraft with a giant graphic depicting hobbits and characters from the film. This was at Auckland Airport before the plane went on a round trip to London to pick up cast members.
Next was the red carpet in Wellington for the premiere itself. I was positioned at the start of the 500 metre walk the stars and celebrities had to tackle, so they were relatively fresh and happy to pose for me. First up was Sir Peter Jackson with his daughter Katie and after Television interviews got to my point and posed for a few photographs. Other cast members including the hobbits followed with Cate Blanchett finally appearing to make the long walk to the Embassy Theatre to watch the film.
